Encounters is het Jongerenprogramma van het Masterclass Festival Amsterdam. In dit programma werken jongeren (14-17 jaar) in de periode voorafgaand aan het festival aan een eigen productie, binnen het artistieke kader van de grootmeester en onder begeleiding van docenten van de curerende kunstinstelling. De performance tijdens en op het Masterclass Festival Amsterdam vormt het slotstuk. Met hun ervaring en vakmanschap verfijnen de grootmeesters de performances en brengen zij nieuwe invalshoeken in de productie.
Masterclass
In deze masterclass staat authentieke bigband-swing centraal. De bigband speelt twee stukken van Sammy Nestico, bekend van het Count Basie Orchestra: een medium swing en een ballad, waarin de typische bigbandklank en de echte swing goed tot hun recht komen.
Talenten
Junior Jazz Experience is een energieke bigband voor jonge, talentvolle jazzmuzikanten die samen repertoire instuderen en podiumervaring opdoen in een professionele setting. De band staat onder leiding van trompettist Lorenzo Mignacca, die met zijn ensembles meerdere malen het hoogste podium van het Prinses Christina Jazz Concours bereikte. Daarmee geldt hij als een inspirerende bandleider met een sterke staat van dienst in talentontwikkeling binnen de Nederlandse jazzscene.
Erik van Lier
Erik van Lier, geboren in Haarlem, begon zijn professionele carrière op 17-jarige leeftijd bij de Nederlandse Radio Big Band The Skymasters. Als vertegenwoordiger van de Nederlandse omroep NOS trad hij op tijdens diverse jazzworkshops van de European Broadcasting Union en verwierf hij internationale erkenning, onder meer met een gedenkwaardige trombonebattle op het Loosdrecht Jazz Festival in 1972. In 1974 studeerde hij in de Verenigde Staten bij vooraanstaande bastrombonisten zoals George Roberts, Phil Teele, Paul Faulise en Ed Kleinhammer. Van Lier speelde vervolgens bij toonaangevende ensembles, waaronder de Kenny Clarke–Francy Boland Big Band, Thad Jones’ Ball of Fire en de bigband van Peter Herbolzheimer. Daarnaast doceerde hij bastrombone en leidde hij meer dan veertig jaar de bigband van het Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
Encounters is the Youth Programme of the Masterclass Festival Amsterdam. In this programme, young participants (ages 14-17) work in the period leading up to the festival on their own production, within the artistic framework of the grandmaster and under the guidance of teachers from the curating arts institution. The performance during the Masterclass Festival Amsterdam serves as the finale. With their experience and expertise, the grandmasters refine the performances and introduce new perspectives into the production.

Talents
Junior Jazz Experience is an energetic big band for young, talented jazz musicians who study repertoire together and gain stage experience in a professional setting. The ensemble is led by trumpeter Lorenzo Mignacca, who has brought his bands to the top stage of the Prinses Christina Jazz Concours multiple times. He is therefore regarded as an inspiring bandleader with a strong track record in developing young jazz talent in the Netherlands.
Erik van Lier
Erik van Lier, born in Haarlem, the Netherlands, began his professional career at 17 with the Dutch radio Big Band The Skymasters. He represented the Dutch radio company NOS at several European Broadcast Union jazz workshops and gained international recognition, including a notable trombone battle at the 1972 Loosdrecht Jazz Festival. In 1974 he studied in the United States with leading bass trombonists such as George Roberts, Phil Teele, Paul Faulise, and Ed Kleinhammer. Van Lier performed with major ensembles including the Kenny Clarke–Francy Boland Big Band, Thad Jones’ Ball of Fire, and Peter Herbolzheimer’s Big Band. He taught bass trombone and directed the big band at the Amsterdam Conservatory for over forty years.
