In de masterclass verdiept Erik Whien zich samen met de acteurs in gelaagde dialogen uit klassiek-modern repertoire. De zes talenten werken in twee groepjes van telkens twee acteurs en één regiestudent. Erik Whien deelt zijn theatervisie, daagt de acteurs uit in hun spel en laat hen ervaren hoe regie en acteerkunst elkaar versterken.

Erik Whien geeft de masterclass aan vier theaterstudenten van de fameuze theaterscholen en twee regiestudenten.
Erik Whien
Erik Whien (1978) is een gerespecteerde Nederlandse theaterregisseur, bekend om zijn precieze tekstregie en psychologisch gelaagde voorstellingen. Hij studeerde in 2000 aan de Toneelacademie Maastricht en werkte daarna bij meerdere gezelschappen. Van 2008 tot 2013 maakte hij deel uit van de creatieve kern van Toneelgroep Oostpool, waar hij onder andere Wachten op Godot en Tsjechov regisseerde.
Daarna was hij vaste maker bij Toneelschuur Producties en regisseerde Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, geselecteerd voor het Nederlands Theater Festival en bekroond met een Louis d’Or voor Jacob Derwig en een Colombina voor Kirsten Mulder. Vanaf 2016 maakte hij deel uit van het makersensemble van Theater Rotterdam, waar hij onder meer Revolutionary Road regisseerde.
Sinds 2021 is Whien huisregisseur bij Het Nationale Theater in Den Haag. In het huidige seizoen regisseert hij de Shakespeare‑klassieker Hamlet, met Hannah Hoekstra, Jacob Derwig en Roman Derwig, waarbij vader en zoon Derwig samen één van de meest besproken producties van het seizoen vormen.
Whien regisseert voorstellingen die menselijke relaties en emoties nauwgezet ontleden, met een scherp oog voor tekst en ensemblespel, en weet zowel klassiek repertoire als hedendaags drama helder en betekenisvol op de scène te brengen.
In the masterclass, Erik Whien explores layered dialogues from classical-modern repertoire together with the actors. The six talents work in two groups, each consisting of two actors and one directing student. Erik Whien shares his theatrical vision, challenges the actors in their performances, and lets them experience how directing and acting can enhance each other.

Erik Whien
Erik Whien (1978) is a respected Dutch theatre director, known for his precise text direction and psychologically layered productions. He graduated from the Maastricht Theatre Academy in 2000 and subsequently worked with several theatre companies. From 2008 to 2013, he was part of the creative core of Toneelgroep Oostpool, where he directed productions including Waiting for Godot and works by Chekhov.
He then became a permanent maker at Toneelschuur Producties and directed Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, which was selected for the Dutch Theatre Festival and awarded a Louis d’Or for Jacob Derwig and a Colombina for Kirsten Mulder. From 2016, he was part of the makers’ ensemble at Theater Rotterdam, where he directed productions such as Revolutionary Road.
Since 2021, Whien has been the resident director at Het Nationale Theater in The Hague. In the current season, he is directing the Shakespearean classic Hamlet, featuring Hannah Hoekstra, Jacob Derwig, and Roman Derwig, with father and son Derwig together in one of the most talked-about productions of the season.
Whien directs productions that carefully explore human relationships and emotions, with a keen eye for text and ensemble work, and he brings both classical repertoire and contemporary drama to the stage in a clear and meaningful way.
