In de Masterclass onderzoekt Erik Kessels met het publiek bijzondere ideeën en onconventionele combinaties, waarbij hij iedereen uitdaagt om nieuwe waardes te bedenken die de basis zouden kunnen vormen voor creatieve uitingen. Kessels staat bekend om zijn onorthodoxe benadering van communicatie en design, zoals in de legendarische campagnes voor het Hans Brinker Budget Hotel – waarbij de ‘slechtste hotel ter wereld’-reputatie juist werd omarmd en creatief ingezet om aandacht en betrokkenheid te genereren. Door het publiek actief te betrekken bij het genereren van ideeën en het doorbreken van traditionele denkkaders, stimuleert Kessels verrassende perspectieven op kunst, creativiteit en communicatie.

Erik Kessels
Erik Kessels (1966) is een Nederlands kunstenaar, ontwerper en curator die woont en werkt in Amsterdam. Hij staat bekend om zijn grote fascinatie voor fotografie en het hergebruik van bestaande beelden. Sinds 1996 is hij creative partner van communicatiebureau KesselsKramer, waar hij werkt voor nationale en internationale opdrachtgevers zoals Ben, Nike, Diesel, Oxfam, Vitra, CitizenM en The Hans Brinker Budget Hotel.
Als kunstenaar en curator publiceerde Kessels meer dan zeventig boeken met zogenoemde ‘re-appropriated images’, waaronder Missing Links, in almost every picture en Shit. Kessels schrijft voor internationale tijdschriften, geeft lezingen op toonaangevende designconferenties en was als docent verbonden aan onder meer de Gerrit Rietveld Academie, ECAL Lausanne en de Amsterdamse Academie van Bouwkunst. Hij maakte en cureerde vele tentoonstellingen, waaronder Loving Your Pictures, 24HRS in Photos en Album Beauty, en co-cureerde From Here On met Martin Parr en anderen. In 2010 ontving hij de Amsterdamprijs voor de Kunst. Zijn mid-career retrospectief was te zien in Turijn, Boedapest, Düsseldorf en het MoMA.
In the Masterclass, Erik Kessels explores unusual ideas and unconventional combinations with the audience, challenging everyone to imagine new values that could form the basis for creative expressions. Kessels is known for his unorthodox approach to communication and design, as seen in the legendary campaigns for the Hans Brinker Budget Hotel – where the hotel’s “worst hotel in the world” reputation was embraced and creatively leveraged to capture attention and engagement. By actively involving the audience in generating ideas and breaking traditional thinking patterns, Kessels encourages fresh perspectives on art, creativity, and communication.

Erik Kessels
Erik Kessels (1966) is a Dutch artist, designer, and curator who lives and works in Amsterdam. He is known for his strong fascination with photography and the reuse of existing images. Since 1996, he has been a creative partner at the communications agency KesselsKramer, where he works for national and international clients such as Ben, Nike, Diesel, Oxfam, Vitra, CitizenM, and The Hans Brinker Budget Hotel.
As an artist and curator, Kessels has published more than seventy books featuring so-called re-appropriated images, including Missing Links, in almost every picture, and Shit. He writes for international magazines, lectures at leading design conferences, and has taught at institutions such as the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, ECAL Lausanne, and the Amsterdam Academy of Architecture. He has created and curated numerous exhibitions, including Loving Your Pictures, 24HRS in Photos, and Album Beauty, and co-curated From Here On with Martin Parr and others. In 2010 he received the Amsterdam Prize for the Arts, and his mid-career retrospective was shown in Turin, Budapest, Düsseldorf, and at MoMA.
