Masterclass
During the masterclass, Bieke Depoorter works closely with two talented master’s students in photography on their own documentary projects, focusing on reflection, development, and finding a renewed direction or momentum. She guides them in shaping their stories and strengthening their narrative voice. Prior to the masterclass, the two students visited Bieke’s studio in Belgium and attended the recent group exhibition Borders at the Museum van de Twijfel in Ghent, which features her work.

Bieke Depoorter
Belgian photographer Bieke Depoorter(1986) is internationally renowned. She earned her master’s degree in photography at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent in 2009 and, three years later, at the age of 25, was nominated by Magnum Photos, becoming a full member in 2016. Depoorter has won several awards, including the Magnum Expression Award, and in 2023 she was nominated for the prestigious Deutsche Börse Foundation Photography Prize. She has published six books, and her work is exhibited worldwide, including Fotomuseum Winterthur (CH), ICP New York & CO Berlin. MoMA (New York) selected one of her books as the best photo book of 2021.
Her photography explores the relationships between photographer, subject, and audience, often beginning with chance encounters and resulting in intimate, critically considered series. Across her work, Depoorter challenges traditional notions of photography and investigates the complex dynamics between photographer, subject, audience, and medium.
